“Learning languages is the key to unlocking the doors of the world.” Anon

The Modern Foreign Languages curriculum at St Patrick’s is designed to foster a love of language learning while promoting respect, tolerance, and appreciation for other cultures. Rooted in the Gospel values of dignity, community, and global solidarity, our curriculum helps pupils to see themselves as part of a diverse and interconnected world.  Learning a foreign language is a gateway to understanding others and building bridges across cultures. Pupils develop the ability to communicate confidently and effectively in French or Spanish, equipping them with essential skills for the modern world and future opportunities in education, work, and travel.

Throughout their studies, pupils explore a range of engaging themes such as identity, family, local and global issues, culture, and the environment, enabling them to make meaningful connections between their own lives and the experiences of others around the world. In doing so, they are encouraged to reflect on their shared humanity and their responsibility to promote peace, understanding, and justice.

Cultural knowledge is central to our curriculum. Through exposure to authentic materials, traditions, festivals, and social customs, pupils gain insight into the lives, histories, and values of people in Francophone and Hispanic communities. This nurtures empathy, respect, and intercultural awareness, core values of our Catholic mission.  By building listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, alongside grammar and vocabulary knowledge, we develop confident, independent learners who can express themselves with clarity and purpose.

Ultimately, our MFL curriculum seeks to prepare pupils not only for academic success, but for life as compassionate, curious, and globally minded citizens who live out their faith by engaging respectfully with the wider world.
