“The whole point of taking pictures is so that you don’t have to explain things with words.” Elliott Erwitt

At our Catholic school, the Photography curriculum is designed to nurture each pupil’s ability to see the world with clarity, compassion and creativity. Rooted in the Gospel values of dignity, truth, and wonder, our approach to photography empowers students to explore their identity, express their beliefs, and reflect the beauty and diversity of God’s creation.

Through the study and practice of photography, pupils develop both technical and conceptual skills, learning how to capture, edit and manipulate images using traditional and digital media. They engage critically with the work of photographers from different periods, cultures, and contexts, developing cultural awareness, historical understanding and a deep respect for the experiences and perspectives of others.

Photography encourages pupils to become visual storytellers, documenting the world around them with intention, empathy and insight. We support pupils in using the camera not just as a tool for recording, but as a means for inquiry, reflection and social commentary, giving voice to personal, moral and spiritual concerns.

Our curriculum begins with the foundational elements of image-making: composition, lighting, form, texture, colour, narrative and perspective. Through practical projects, pupils are challenged to experiment, problem-solve and innovate, building the confidence to take creative risks and the resilience to refine their ideas.

In line with our Catholic ethos, we believe that through photography, students can develop a profound sense of responsibility as creators and interpreters of images. They learn to consider the ethical implications of visual communication, to celebrate truth and human dignity, and to use their artistic gifts to uplift, inspire and contribute positively to society.

Ultimately, we aim for our pupils to leave with a lifelong appreciation of photography as a powerful art form, capable of deepening our understanding of ourselves, others and the world, and of bearing witness to the beauty, complexity and sacredness of life.
