“Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.” Victor Hugo

Music is celebrated as a gift from God, an expression of the beauty, creativity, and joy of the human spirit. Grounded in Gospel values such as joy, community, stewardship of talents, and the dignity of the human person, our music curriculum provides all pupils with the opportunity to encounter and participate in the universal language of music.

Through a rich and inclusive curriculum, pupils are encouraged to experience a wide variety of musical styles and traditions, fostering a deep understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of music as both a cultural and spiritual force. Inspired by the Psalms’ call to “make a joyful noise to the Lord,” pupils are supported in developing their God-given talents, growing in self-confidence, creativity, and a sense of achievement.

We aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music from a broad range of historical periods, genres, styles, and cultures, including the works of great composers and musicians.
  • Sing and use their voices expressively, compose individually and collaboratively, and explore music-making through both traditional and digital means, reflecting the Gospel value of collaboration and shared purpose.
  • Have opportunities to learn musical instruments, developing discipline and resilience, allowing pupils to perform various music as a solo musician and in an ensemble.
  • Explore how music is created, produced, and communicated through the core elements of music, building their ability to listen with discernment and compose their own music in various genres

Music in our Catholic context is not only an academic pursuit but also a spiritual one. Whether in liturgical celebration, classroom performance, or personal exploration, music nurtures the soul and unites our community in worship and joy. Pupils come to understand that music can lift the heart, deepen prayer, express solidarity, and build peace, echoing the Gospel message of love and harmony.
