“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” Pablo Picasso
The Art & Design curriculum is rooted in the Gospel values of creativity, wonder, dignity, and stewardship. We believe every child is made in the image of God, endowed with the capacity to create and reflect beauty, truth, and meaning in the world around them. Through the study and practice of art, pupils explore the richness of God’s creation and their own God-given talents.
Our intent is to provide a nurturing and inclusive environment where all pupils can express their thoughts, feelings and faith through visual, tactile and sensory experiences. Pupils are encouraged to work both independently and collaboratively, developing the confidence, competence and imagination to become reflective artists and compassionate global citizens.
Beginning with the formal elements of art: line, tone, form, mood, colour, texture, composition and pattern, our curriculum builds foundational skills through exposure to diverse media, techniques and artists from a wide range of historical and cultural contexts. This fosters pupils’ appreciation of artistic traditions and their respect for different cultures, beliefs and perspectives.
We encourage pupils to think critically and act with discernment, learning to evaluate their own work and that of others with empathy and integrity. Through their artistic journey, pupils come to understand the important role that art, craft and design play in cultural heritage, community, worship, and contemporary society.
In line with our mission as a Catholic school, we seek to cultivate awe, gratitude and a sense of purpose in our learners, equipping them to respond to the world not only as creative individuals, but also as people of faith, called to shape a more beautiful, just and hope-filled future.
