Head of Department: Mr R Fitzgerald

Exam Board: AQA

Pupils will be encouraged to develop a love of reading through studying classical and modern literature across the five years.  They will study Shakespeare, pre-1914 literature & poetry and modern plays and novels to acquire an understanding of how writers use character, theme and language to engage readers. They will be exposed to a diverse range of voices and perspectives, challenging them to consider how others’ lives differ from their own, encouraging them to be more empathetic and considerate of different experiences.

Pupils will also learn how to use the techniques they study in their own writing, learning how to use a range of devices for different purposes and audiences. This will enable them to express their own ideas, thoughts and feelings more fluently and effectively, as well as equipping them with the necessary skills for economic success and security in the future.

Finally, pupils will also be taught how to use spoken language to convey their thoughts and ideas and communicate well in a range of situations. Through developed oracy study, pupils will become more confident and effective communicators and listeners, allowing them to identify the value of their own opinions and become more open-minded and appreciative of the opinions of others.
