“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” Steve Jobs
Design and Technology enables pupils to develop practical skills, creativity and critical thinking through a range of specialist areas. At KS3 this comprises Food Technology, Systems, Architecture, Construction and 3D Design. Grounded in Gospel values such as stewardship, service, and care for creation, these subjects encourage pupils to use their God-given talents to design with purpose, empathy and responsibility.
- Food Technology, pupils explore the importance of nutrition, sustainability and health and safety – learning to prepare food that supports health and wellbeing while considering ethical sourcing and care for the environment.
- Systems, they investigate electronic and mechanical solutions, developing problem-solving skills as they design functional and innovative products that can serve others in meaningful ways.
- Architecture and Construction, students develop their understanding of the world around them, why and how buildings and other structures are designed the way they are and their role in the future of a sustainable and innovative industry.
- 3D Design, pupils explore a variety of materials and techniques to create practical and sustainable products that meet real human needs.
At Key Stage 4, pupils can specialise further in areas that reflect both their interests and aspirations.
- In Hospitality and Catering, students deepen their understanding of food preparation, customer care and the wider hospitality industry, learning how to serve others with dignity and professionalism, in keeping with Catholic values of community and compassion.
- In 3D Design, pupils are stimulated by the environment and product creation, developing solutions that are imaginative, sustainable and reflective of human needs.
- Construction introduces pupils to the principles and practices of the built environment, promoting skills that support stewardship, teamwork and the ethical responsibility of shaping spaces that are safe, inclusive and life-enhancing.
By combining technical expertise with moral and creative insight, our Design and Technology curriculum inspires pupils to become thoughtful designers, responsible makers and compassionate problem-solvers, ready to contribute positively to the world around them. The curriculum equips students with the core values and understanding to enable them to be both the best version of themselves both academically and socially to provide them with long term career opportunities.
