“Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.” Albert Einstein
Here at St Patrick’s Mathematics is not only seen as a vital academic discipline but as a reflection of God’s order and creativity in the universe. Our Mathematics curriculum seeks to inspire curiosity, integrity, perseverance, core principles that align with our faith. Mathematics is a creative and highly interconnected discipline, developed over centuries to solve some of humanity’s most challenging problems. It empowers learners with essential skills for everyday life and future employment, and underpins the fields of science, technology, and engineering. Through a high-quality Mathematics education, our pupils gain a foundational understanding of the world, the ability to think critically and reason logically, and an appreciation of the beauty and harmony present in mathematical structures, mirroring the divine order of creation.
Inspired by the Gospel values of wisdom and perseverance, we aim for all pupils to:
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice, developing deep understanding and the ability to apply knowledge accurately and efficiently.
- Reason mathematically, think critically, and respect for truth by engaging in enquiry, exploring patterns and relationships, and articulating ideas clearly using precise mathematical language.
- Solve problems with creativity, resilience, and faith in their abilities, applying mathematical skills to both routine and non-routine challenges, breaking down complex issues, and persevering in the pursuit of solutions, echoing the Gospel call to never give up.
In all of this, we nurture a sense of wonder, awe, and joy, reflecting the Catholic belief that through learning we come to know more about God’s world and our place within it.
