European Day of Languages 'Week'

During the week Monday 26th September - Friday 30th September, the Modern Languages department organised and ran a series of events to engage pupils in the European Day Of Languages. The events included ‘Speak for a Sweet’  at break time, a  welcome to each lesson in a foreign language from all teachers,  Pre – school continental breakfast and lunch time food tasting and music club. These events were very well received by students from all year groups from year seven through to year eleven.

The year seven and eight students took part in a foreign language treasure hunt, in which they had to find professions and greetings in 26 different languages. They went into class and were able to discuss just how important learning languages can be in this day and age.

On the Tuesday evening 30 students from years 8, 9 and 10 took part in a EuroChef cooking competition where they had to get into groups to create a culinary masterpiece from a European country. The competition was fierce with students making dishes such as Italian Bruschetta, Spaghetti, Pizza, Risotto and French Crepes. The dishes were all delicious and it was incredibly difficult to find a winner.  A special mention has to be given to our Czech students who gave us some fantastic traditional Czech food. We will never forget the lovely ‘Kolinka ze sirem’. Eventually, after much eating, it was decided that the winners would be the team comprising Rebecca Dooley, Jessica Walker and Georgia McKevit, pictured below, for their excellent  Croque- en- Bouche. This was a truly fantastic dish that showed a high degree of skill and creativity.

The week overall was a resounding success with many students enjoying or 'not' as the case may be, a variety of European foods. On Wednesday students were able to sample such delicacies as olives, German rye bread, salami, camembert, Spanish jamon, German meat balls and much, much more!!

Throughout the week students were able to show off their language skills and ‘win’ a sweet at the same time. Each break time a member of the MFL team was available with a tub of delights ready to exchange for a phrase or a word in a language other than English. It was amazing how many excellent accents that we heard from students who previously had been ‘shy’!!

The week finished with a continental breakfast for our early birds. Croissants, pain au chocolat, Danish pastries and brioche washed down with orange juice and coffee. Some students in particular enjoyed the delights on offer!! An excellent way to end an excellent week!!!
