BTEC and GCSE Art & Design

Pupils are able to choose one of two possible routes BTEC or GCSE.

BTEC: Pupils are able to continue with their BTEC course of study started in Yr9 with the view to adding more units of work to those already completed. They are able to achieve the following depending on work rate, ability and effort:

  • BTEC Certificate (equivalent point score to 1 GCSE A*-C grade)
  • BTEC Certificate Extended (equivalent point score to 2 GCSEs A*-C grade)
  • BTEC Diploma (equivalent point score to 4 GCSEs A*-C grade)

Units covered within the BTEC Diploma are:

  1. Contextual References in Art & Design
  2. 2D Visual Communication
  3. 3D visual Communication
  4. Using Ideas to Explore, Develop and Produce Art & Design
  5. Building an Art & Design Portfolio
  6. Working in the Art & Design Industry

An additional 2 units will be selected by the teacher from the choice below:

  1. Working with Graphic Design Briefs
  2. Working with Photography Brief
  3. Working with Fashion Design Briefs
  4. Working with Textile Briefs
  5. Working with 3D Design Briefs
  6. Working with Interactive Media Briefs
  7. Working with Visual Arts Briefs
  8. Working with 3D Design Crafts Briefs
  9. Working with Digital Art & Design Briefs
  10. Working with Accessory Briefs
  11. Working with Moving Image Briefs
  12. Working with Site Specific Briefs

GCSE: Pupils will attempt to complete two full GCSEs in two years. They will initially start to study for a GCSE in Photography with a view to it being completed within one academic year. Provided pupils have the requisite amount of coursework they will be entered for the exam which will take place in the summer term of year 10.

Pupils who are successful in achieving this are then able to start a GCSE in Art & Design. Those pupils not entered for the GCSE Photography in Year 10 will then use one photography project to form part of the coursework for GCSE Art & Design.
