Aiming for a Career in Medicine 2012

For the third year running, the NHS After School Programme has once again been a great success. 13 of our Year 9 pupils recently attended the series of 4 inspirational healthcare workshops led by NHS healthcare professionals at Salford Royal NHS.  The programme is designed to give pupils a hands-on insight into the broad range of health careers available in the NHS and the progression routes into these careers.  The sessions have shown pupils how each employee has an important part to play in the Trust effectiveness and how, with hard work and commitment, they can achieve a rewarding career within the NHS.

The sessions have provided pupils with the chance to learn new skills by taking part in hands-on activities.  Sessions included one held by staff from the hospitals laboratory team who showed pupils how to analyse blood samples to identity certain illnesses. Another enabled pupils to see the importance of ensuring cleanliness to minimise the risk of infection.  During the session they learnt how to wash their hands correctly and to prepare the skin ready to apply a dressing or insert a canula. Pupils learnt about different types of nursing and the Nursing Cadet Scheme. They also took part in a role playing session where they learnt how to communicate appropriately with a patient. At the end of the programme, the pupils were all presented with a certificate by the Clinicians who led the workshops.

We hope this will prove inspirational to the pupils involved and possibly help them aspire to a career in medicine.  The event is one of many activities carried out in school to help raise pupil aspirations.
